10 minutes!!

Yes, 10 minutes is the maximum you should be sitting on the toilet, because sitting on toilet for hours can cause more harm than you think.

But nowadays toilets have become a new place for endless scrolling.

People carry phones everywhere, the toilet is no exception. Ten minutes turn into thirty, and thirty can sometimes stretch to over an hour.

But why is sitting on the toilet for hours bad?

What damage is it causing to the body? And how can we fix it? We’ll find answers to those questions in this blog post ⤵

What’s the ideal time for sitting in toilet?

Ideally, 10 minutes or less is considered healthy. In this time, you focus on your business without any distractions.

However, nowadays, people consider it cool to sit there for extended hours while watching reels.

They say, “Hey, I keep my phone clean, and I need some entertainment. I even read the newspaper there, it saves time.”

But then those 10 minutes turn into an hour, and it’s harming your body in many ways.

How sitting on toilet for hours is bad for you

▶ Sitting for too long can put unwanted pressure on the rectum. This pressure can cause swollen blood vessels a.k.a. hemorrhoids or piles.

▶ When people sit for extended periods in the toilet, they’re obviously not moving their lower body.
This lack of movement can cause blood to pool in the lower body, which increases pressure in the blood vessels. Over time, this may raise the risk of swelling, numbness, and even varicose veins.
This issue is also known as venous pooling.

Pelvic floor muscles, which support the bladder, uterus (in women), and rectum, can become weakened with prolonged toilet sitting.

When pelvic floor muscles are weakened, problems like these become a thing:

  • Peeing too often
  • Leaking pee while laughing or sneezing
  • Trouble emptying the bowel

▶ A toilet seat can further injure a person if they decide to sit and have a reel fiesta there.

Let’s be real, toilet seats or commodes are not designed for comfortable seating over long periods.

They’re narrow. Your bum and thighs are resting on a very small surface. It squeezes nerves and tissues and can even lead to injury.

Ultimately, prolonged sitting can:

  • Cause pain and swelling
  • Make it difficult to sit (even on other chairs)

▷ Last but not least, just imagine how unhygienic it is to take your phone into the toilet and then carry that same phone everywhere else.

That phone:

  • Will be touching your skin
  • Will join you at the dinner table

It’s contributing to making you sick. Research says that our phone contains similar bacteria as in human and animal faecal matter.

What happens if you are sitting on toilet for hours even without phone

Well, that’s a case too. I mean, some people are trying hard but still can’t empty their stomach.

That could be chronic constipation, and it stresses your entire digestive system.

You’re sitting extra, trying hard, but what you might get in return are piles, fissures, and pelvic floor dysfunction.

So, if you’re sitting and straining regularly, it might be time to see a doctor.

Solution?

So, the simplest and easiest solution is not to carry the phone to the toilet.

Then consult to a doctor if you have difficulty in pooping. Even with special toilets or seats, sitting on the toilet for hours is still harmful

Conclusion

Sitting on the toilet for hours might feel like harmless “me-time,” but it’s not doing your body any favor.

10 mins is good enough. If it’s taking too long, then it’s a sign of concern.

Just remember, your toilet is not a mini-theatre and definitely not your office.

Keep it short, do what you are meant to do there, and stay healthy.

Keep thriving

  1. This was an interesting post and I can understand the concerns of sitting there for too long. Many people might not even be aware of the harm that can happen while sitting there too long especially if the person makes a habit of it. Thank you for sharing this Devang. I hope that you have been well.

  2. Definitely not the most comfortable seat in the house…but sometimes the only ‘quiet’ spot in the house! Sitting there until your legs go to sleep is definitely not good for anyone!
