What’s in a name ask Shakespeare, but there’s a lot in the name. Today I will be participating in yet another prompt by WordPress because it’s bloganuary.
Well, seriously speaking I don’t care about bloganuray because this was the first month of my blogging journey where I’ve posted much less. I am participating in this prompt to try something new and indirectly to get views, because believe it or not, people read such things (prompts).
Don’t worry, I will be writing health articles and you will read something amazing from my side soon (well, all my posts are amazing anyway). But, for now let’s focus on what’s the meaning of my name.
Meaning of my name
So if in any case you don’t know my name yet, it’s Devang upadhyaya. This is my real name and I am from India. My name has a beautiful meaning and I like my name.
The meaning of my name is in the name itself, it means “Part of God” Dev is male-god, and “ang” means part. So Dev+ang= Part of God.
My name is taken from Bhagwat Geeta by my Grand mother. When I was a child, my name was Durgesh (Thank god it’s not the same now). In my first birth certificate it is Durgesh. But thank all-mighty that my name was changed to what it is now.
In India, many people take the first alphabet into consideration. Like my name starts with “D” and according to astrologer at that time, I can keep name with D only (based on the position of planets and time of birth). That makes my zodiac sign pieces. In India, people mostly see zodiac sign based on the first alphabet. So, I have 2 zodiac sign the one based on date (libra) and one based on first’s alphabet.
Astrologer and priest consider zodiac signs based on alphabet to be more accurate. In India, more importance is given to that.
Funny variations of my name
So my name Devang is not common where I live. People always think that I’m from Gujarat (neighbouring state). That’s because Devang is a more common name there. There you can find variations like Devank, Devanash, Devangi (a name for girl), Devangshi (another girl’s name), Devanshu and similar such names.
There was a girl in my class whose name was Devangshi and people always assumed that she’s my sister. She even had a roll number just after me for many years.
I’ve just discovered that there’s a movie with my name, so okay.
Another funny thing is most people can’t say my name properly, they often find it typical to say. They say Divyang (specially abled), Debang, Devan, Daywang, Deven and similar such names.
I haven’t met anyone with a similar name like mine so it’s safe to say it’s not that common, although as I said It’s very common in Gujarat.
Hey, fun fact My favorite blogger‘s name is very common. People often ask her what her name means. It means an auspicious ceremony, or simply a prayer offered to gods or any ceremony that is conducted before any event like marriage, or starting anything new. It’s that common that Indians say it almost daily.
It’s that common that there are sectors, park, enterprises, agencies, match sticks, incense sticks after this name.
Why I am telling you this? Well, 3 reasons- 1: She’s busy enough to do/write such things. 2: I will get popularity and praises from her followers for doing this thing and I will also get views from them. 3: To increase word count of this post.
What I don’t like
What I don’t like is when people don’t speak my name completely, or call me Upadhyaya or anything like that. I like my name and appreciate hearing it completely.
When you use the surname to call someone, it’s often used to show deference. People at the gym call me Mr Upadhyaya or Upadhyaya ji or Upadhyaya Saheb (sir), but still I prefer being called as Devang or Devang upadhyaya.
I also like being called DU. People can call me D.U if they have difficulty in wasting 2 breaths to say my entire name. A dear blogging friend call me DevU, I like that. Some people call me D, which is fine as well.
Speaking of deference; in India, people don’t call elders by name, like they add “ji” (after the name), sir or won’t even say the name at all. It’s a sign of respect.
Surname also matters
In India, surname also matters or has some importance. Like it represents caste. It also represents where you come from. Like my surname is more common in other states, in my states it’s not that common.
People consider surname as sign of status symbol, it even tells what kind of background or family you come from. However, I hope this to change in the future, because such things create divides.
Conclusion
Hey so that’s it, I guess. Now you know what my name means. It means part of god. Now your turn, you tell me what your name means or if there’s any significance behind your name.
I enjoyed writing this, because I had to do no research for this one. Trust me researches are tiring, like I’m writing an article on kelly clarkson’s weight loss and had to do tons of research for that..
I am also working on a post for FGW and I promise to return. Ahhh it’s already 29, so I will try super hard to research-write-publish that within this month.
Until next time, Devang says to keep smiling.
