Bloganuary writing prompt
Write about your first name: its meaning, significance, etymology, etc.

What’s in a name ask Shakespeare, but there’s a lot in the name. Today I will be participating in yet another prompt by WordPress because it’s bloganuary.

Well, seriously speaking I don’t care about bloganuray because this was the first month of my blogging journey where I’ve posted much less. I am participating in this prompt to try something new and indirectly to get views, because believe it or not, people read such things (prompts).

Don’t worry, I will be writing health articles and you will read something amazing from my side soon (well, all my posts are amazing anyway). But, for now let’s focus on what’s the meaning of my name.

Meaning of my name

So if in any case you don’t know my name yet, it’s Devang upadhyaya. This is my real name and I am from India. My name has a beautiful meaning and I like my name.

The meaning of my name is in the name itself, it means “Part of God” Dev is male-god, and “ang” means part. So Dev+ang= Part of God.

My name is taken from Bhagwat Geeta by my Grand mother. When I was a child, my name was Durgesh (Thank god it’s not the same now). In my first birth certificate it is Durgesh. But thank all-mighty that my name was changed to what it is now.

In India, many people take the first alphabet into consideration. Like my name starts with “D” and according to astrologer at that time, I can keep name with D only (based on the position of planets and time of birth). That makes my zodiac sign pieces. In India, people mostly see zodiac sign based on the first alphabet. So, I have 2 zodiac sign the one based on date (libra) and one based on first’s alphabet.

Astrologer and priest consider zodiac signs based on alphabet to be more accurate. In India, more importance is given to that.

Funny variations of my name

So my name Devang is not common where I live. People always think that I’m from Gujarat (neighbouring state). That’s because Devang is a more common name there. There you can find variations like Devank, Devanash, Devangi (a name for girl), Devangshi (another girl’s name), Devanshu and similar such names.

There was a girl in my class whose name was Devangshi and people always assumed that she’s my sister. She even had a roll number just after me for many years.

I’ve just discovered that there’s a movie with my name, so okay.

Another funny thing is most people can’t say my name properly, they often find it typical to say. They say Divyang (specially abled), Debang, Devan, Daywang, Deven and similar such names.

Learn how to say my name

I haven’t met anyone with a similar name like mine so it’s safe to say it’s not that common, although as I said It’s very common in Gujarat.

Hey, fun fact My favorite blogger‘s name is very common. People often ask her what her name means. It means an auspicious ceremony, or simply a prayer offered to gods or any ceremony that is conducted before any event like marriage, or starting anything new. It’s that common that Indians say it almost daily.

It’s that common that there are sectors, park, enterprises, agencies, match sticks, incense sticks after this name.

Why I am telling you this? Well, 3 reasons- 1: She’s busy enough to do/write such things. 2: I will get popularity and praises from her followers for doing this thing and I will also get views from them. 3: To increase word count of this post.

What I don’t like

What I don’t like is when people don’t speak my name completely, or call me Upadhyaya or anything like that. I like my name and appreciate hearing it completely.

When you use the surname to call someone, it’s often used to show deference. People at the gym call me Mr Upadhyaya or Upadhyaya ji or Upadhyaya Saheb (sir), but still I prefer being called as Devang or Devang upadhyaya.

I also like being called DU. People can call me D.U if they have difficulty in wasting 2 breaths to say my entire name. A dear blogging friend call me DevU, I like that. Some people call me D, which is fine as well.

Speaking of deference; in India, people don’t call elders by name, like they add “ji” (after the name), sir or won’t even say the name at all. It’s a sign of respect.

Surname also matters

In India, surname also matters or has some importance. Like it represents caste. It also represents where you come from. Like my surname is more common in other states, in my states it’s not that common.

People consider surname as sign of status symbol, it even tells what kind of background or family you come from. However, I hope this to change in the future, because such things create divides.

Conclusion

Hey so that’s it, I guess. Now you know what my name means. It means part of god. Now your turn, you tell me what your name means or if there’s any significance behind your name.

I enjoyed writing this, because I had to do no research for this one. Trust me researches are tiring, like I’m writing an article on kelly clarkson’s weight loss and had to do tons of research for that..

I am also working on a post for FGW and I promise to return. Ahhh it’s already 29, so I will try super hard to research-write-publish that within this month.

Until next time, Devang says to keep smiling.

My husband is Greek and I honey have the name but my spirit seems to have Greek background:

Meaning:Light; Woman from Kynthos. Cindy is a girl’s name derived from multiple origins. It is a diminutive of the Greek Cynthia, meaning “woman from Kynthos,” and the Latin Lucinda, meaning “light.” In ancient Greece, Cynthia was the original epithet of the goddess Artemis, who was born on Mount Kynthos.

I really enjoyed reading this post. WP prompts are fun to participate in, I guess. I will try it too.
My name Poorwa was given to me by a pandit ji after my birth. It means ‘wind’ or ‘to flow’, though when I search the meaning on google it says ‘a classical melody, from the east’ etc.

    1. Oh Hi!

Interesting name with an interesting meaning.

      What do you relate with?

      Wind or melody?

      1. Both actually. I usually don’t have things planned so I just go with the flow like wind and melody, music is just my biggest comfort so yes

      2. Yeah
        Both in that case

        Take care

  7. Your name is very interesting. I have many Indian friends online, and I may not be addressing them properly. I call them by their first name, as we would here in the US. Is this rude?

    1. Thanks! 🙇🏻‍♂️

No, calling by first name is not rude at all. 😀

I just don’t use first name of elders, because thats what we are taught from beginning.
Although people of same age or younger can be called with the name.

If we are calling elders we need to add sir/ma’am or ji or unlce/aunty etc.

  8. Your name is beautiful, Devang.
The meaning of my name, is literally in my name xD

    1. Thanks for sharing
      Thanks for commenting

  9. So, finally replying to your blogs after almost two years and you should not forgive me for that. And, who better than you, knows the real meaning of my name. Well, for others, my name’s meaning is indication/ signal/ cue/ clue/ intimation/ allusion (not to be confused with illusion).

    1. I prefer Indicator!!
      Sounds better 🫣

  10. Devang – it is indeed a beautiful name and the meaning of it is very auspicious.

  14. This was such an insightful and entertaining post, Devang! I really enjoyed learning about the meaning behind your name and the cultural significance it holds, especially the interesting tidbit about how your name changed from Durgesh to Devang. It’s fascinating how names can carry so much weight and history within them, not to mention the astrological aspect you mentioned, which adds another layer of depth. The story about people confusing you and Devangshi as siblings gave me a good chuckle!

Your approach to Bloganuary, using it as a way to engage with prompts and draw readers, is clever and shows a great understanding of how to connect with your audience. Plus, the respect and affection you have for your name really shines through, making the post all the more personal and relatable.

I’m curious, given the importance of names in your culture, do you have any favorite names or ones that you find particularly meaningful or beautiful?

    1. Hi, thanks for your comment.

Yes Devang have special meaning as you read and I feel pride with it.

I would like to participate more in these prompts. Need to find the right one.

I don’t have any specific favorite name. There are many common names in my country. Like my favorite bloggers name is quite common

  15. Oh, incredible piece, love your work 👏 ❤ 🙌 😀

    1. Thanks!!

      Check out more

  16. Devang, this was an interesting post! I’m glad you decided to participate in this. Learned something new about you, and I liked your humorous tone.

My name is biblical, and in Hebrew it means “star” and also known as Hadassah. I just learned that Hadassah means “myrtle tree.” Cool…I learned something new about my name too.

    1. I love your name
      It’s unique and lovely.

What’s the meaning of other 2 Es

  17. […] I would prefer. But, I am doing it because 1: To change the flow, 2: To get a new audience. Because the last prompt got good attention. People liked knowing the meaning of my […]

  18. Interesting! Name is sacrosanct for everyone. I don’t like using acronym, as the very meaning of the beautiful name is distorted.

    1. Oh well
You are using acronym here though sir 🤭

      1. I’m not talking about my own name 😊
