Daily writing prompt
What are your favorite physical activities or exercises?

Usually, I just ignore these prompts as I don’t find anything of my interest. But, this topic is a bit interesting, so I decided to participate.

When, it comes to physical activity or exercising, I do engage in a certain workout or activity and invest 6 days a week to it. This regularity, worked wonders for me, and now I feel I am way more capable than I was at the age of 24.

Selecting the right kind of workout or exercise routine, that works for you is crucial and in this post, I’ll be talking about my favorite.

Favorite physical activities or exercises

I love doing HIIT. HIIT stands for High Intensity Interval Training. As the name suggests, it is high intensity, with moves that are high paced and have very short duration of breaks. This form comes under the cardio exercises, where you don’t necessarily use any equipment and perform the exercises back to back.

I used to do cardio even before pandemic, but during pandemic, I needed something that can be done at home with minimum space and equipments. That’s when I learned about HIIT and I started doing exercises that I was seeing on YouTube.

HIIT is very demanding, it requires, great amount of stamina, endurance and precision. I won’t be saying, I was a beginner, when I first started doing HIIT, because I was on and off with gym since 2016. And during pandemic, I started learning HIIT more and more.

Sometimes these sessions were of 30 mins, 50 mins etc. and these were very challenging, and you get very tired if you complete 1 session of 40–50 mins.

exercise - HIIT

But, honestly, HIIT wasn’t helping me to lose weight during the pandemic. It was keeping me active, but I was getting lethargic and lazy about it and with a bad diet, I was putting on more weight and felt that HIIT was getting tougher for me.

I was reluctant to re-join the gym as I was not sure if it’s safe to go to gym after the lockdown was lifted.

I joined gym

When I re-joined the gym in 2022, I realized that I was lacking a lot. With much bigger place and more equipments, I realized that HIIT didn’t improve my stamina or anything. I continued doing HIIT, but I included weight training as well.

With a good diet and a scheduled workout, I am able to lose 28 kg. But, people also think that HIIT or cardio helped me lose that much weight. I would say Nah Nah.

Cardio did nothing, HIIT did nothing. Yes, it is my favorite form of workout, but for weight loss, you may need a lot more.

Why you may need HIIT or Cardio

There are 2 things to this.

First, you may need cardio at first if you have joined a gym. I have seen a lot of people at gym, who are clueless with dumbbells and machines, and they don’t know what they are doing. Cardio is for them, because it teaches them foundation. It teaches them basic of any exercise and for beginners it is safe.

If done properly, cardio is a great form of exercise. Whether you are skinny or fat, small or big, you may need cardio at first before immediately started lifting weights.

This is just my opinion, I could be wrong. But at gym, when you start lifting weights immediately and if you do it incorrectly, then you can injure yourself for life. That is why, cardio is great for beginners to learn and understand how various exercises works. Or, it could be for those who want to add something extra to their routine.

Cardio can include a lot of things, it could be body weight, or with band, ropes, machine like treadmills/runners, dance session, or with a lightweight equipment, but it is to build a foundation. I personally learned many complex exercises because I was comfortable with HIIT/cardio.

But, the second thing is, you may not need cardio at all.

Why you may not need HIIT or Cardio

Look, if you want to lose weight, and you think only cardio or HIIT can help you lose weight, then you are wrong. As I mentioned above, that people at gym thinks that high intensity exercise helped me lose weight, but they know nothing about me.

Yes, HIIT helps in burning fat, but after a point it stops working. If you keep doing that without weight training or plan, then you will see your body will not get into the shape you desired.

You may get loose skin, and after a point you won’t lose weight at all. I used HIIT for excitement and thrill, because it is fun. But, you may need a lot more to get results after a point.

I used to do HIIT 4–5 times a week, now I do HIIT 2 times a month or sometimes only once a month. Because, now, my body demands weight training. Plus, HIIT takes a toll on my body, now I don’t have stamina issues, but HIIT may be hard on joints, and it’s not for every age. I do feel 24 now, but I should realize that now at the age of 30, it’s the perfect time to take care of joints.

I will talk about how weight training could or could not be for you in a future post. I never promoted any specific form of exercise, and here I am not promoting HIIT or weight training. I would love to share my personal experience, so that people can enjoy workout safely.

HIIT may or may not be for you. I still enjoy it, because it gives an excitement. But, our goal should always be staying fit and active. In the next post, I will talk about why everyone should move their body.

Until next time, Keep smiling.

  1. I only walk, but do it daily. Sometimes I also do chair yoga.

    1. If you do it daily
      Then that’s sufficient.

Keep it up. It’s definitely keeping you healthy

      1. Thanks Devang. Yes I believe it’s good for me to keep moving.

  2. of a very disciplined nature you are, Devang.
very encouraging and inspiring to us who are lazy😬
    Thank you for sharing 🤍

    1. What is your favourite exercise?

      1. favorite exercise… unheard of to me this term 😬😁
        Just kidding… no favorites lol.

      2. You need something then

Stay tuned for next blog post

      3. will do.. 🤍

  3. Treadmill, walks outdoors if the weather is nice, and swimming. I recently signed up to the YMCA and swimming is helping me get in shape. There is no point doing exercises that you are miserable doing – at least, that’s what I believe. If it’s fun, you’ll be more motivated to work out.

    1. Hmm
It has to has to fun and enjoyable, so that we can do it regularly.

We need to find activities that are good to us

      1. If it’s not fun and enjoyable, it’s almost guaranteed to backfire. I wanted to like HIIT. At first it seemed to be working but then I twisted a couple of muscles and it became painful, so I had to stop.

      2. HIIT may not be for everyone.

It needs intensity, and back to back exercises.
Some people like it slow. HIIT is surely very tiring

  4. Great post D!
HIIT workouts get you in shape the fastest for those who can manage them. You obvi can and do! Love it. I miss doing them as my joints say no!
    Love the automated chart!
    Awesome❣️

  5. I prefer brisk walk and some yoga.

    1. That’s great.
Nothing beats the good old walking. Most impactful exercise

  6. I have a list of exercises that i do everyday for 20 inutes after a 30 minute run or walk.

    1. That’s great to know.
Good thing you are staying active

  7. Really interesting to read more about these exercises.

    1. Your favorite is Yoga I presume.

      How are you doing btw?

      1. I like cardio as well but yeah yoga is my favourite. I’m good although I sprained my ankle so no yoga for a while 😞

      2. You don’t find trouble

        trouble always finds you

        whom you were kicking?

      3. Definitely not RG 😅

      4. I doubt!!!

Try to stay alive. You have been busy, girl!!
        What are you cooking?

      5. I’ve definitely been so busy but happy too! Making dhokla like a real Guju lol 😅

      6. You being happy is something new.

        Take care.
        Real guju 🫣😝

      7. Lol, let’s hope it lasts. Take care too 😅

  8. Great post. I used to be very active and go to the gym religiously at the same time every morning. Maybe even twice a day.. then the pandemic hit and everything went to poop. But I plan on getting back into the groove soon! Keep up the good work and good blogs.

    1. Good luck with that
I hope you can find safe and hygienic gym.
      Thanks for your time.
      Best wishes.

  9. Your website is a safe place for my mind, and I appreciate how hard you work to find interesting material to post on it. Wishing you luck and a never-ending desire to learn.

  10. Yes, that is good to keep fit and healthy.

    1. Handsome VKV!!

      How are you doing sir?

  11. What is my favorite exercise?? That is a hard question. But the first thing that comes into my mind is walking and low intensity hiking! I also like to play badminton but not enough space to play it.

    1. Hiking and walking are great exercise tbh.
Great calorie burner and overall keeps healthy.
I used to like badminton too 😊

  12. HIIT and Cardio don’t burn as many calories as people think and they often end up over eating because they feel like they “earned it” with a hard workout. Weight loss happens primarily in the kitchen, not the gym. I also had much more success with weight loss by doing strength training. When we have more muscle, it makes our body less efficient, which means we end up burning more calories just existing. Nice write up and keep up the good work!

    1. Weight training helps in burn great amount of calories and fat. Plus they help in shaping the body. People sleep on weight training, but it’s amazing.

My goal is now to get in good shape. Yes, HIIT/cardio helped me, but for weight loss, I won’t be needing it 🙂

Thanks a lot for your comment.

  13. I like to walk, but my favourite is Shavasana,

    1. Walking is a great form of exercise 😄

  14. We have the same favorite type! 🙂 I still like HIIT, but like you mentioned I’m kinda starting to think about how it would affect my joints, especially when I get older. I don’t want to have injuries if it’s too intense. >.<

I’m trying to research other fun exercises to try! I haven’t tried much weight training yet. Good to hear that it’s working for you ✨

    1. Weight trainning is fun as well. It may not be intense or exciting like HIIT. But, it’s impactful.

You can try yoga, dance, resistance bands, etc. So many options for you.

HIIT is risky for knees, need to protect them at young age.

  15. I only dance and walk

    1. That’s great actually!!

      Keep doing that
      And keep eating healthy 😀

  16. As I am getting older, I really need to start exercising more. This post helps motivate me!

    1. Try to find something that you can do freely.
Something that is not much challenging
Something that is good for the joints.
And something that doesn’t require motivation from others to do it.

If you can find something like this, and if you can invest atleast 30 days to it without getting bored of it, then you can start your health journey as well.

  17. Love this blog started doing more exercise❤️

    1. Glad to hear that.

      What form of exercise?

    1. I hope!!
      Thanks for reading and appreciating.

This is my niche, so I talk about health and wellness in general

  27. I enjoy a combination of workouts. I start with a cardio warm up, then focus on one particular section of body e.g abs, and then finish with another round of cardio. I am not a very gym kind of person and till I started using this strategy, I would often miss out working certain body parts. I would even loose motivation to go to the gym since planning what workouts to do would look tedious. The focus would shift from the actual workout to workout planning!
I was once fortunate enough to find a dedicate and knowledgeable trainer who introduced me to this strategy. Many of the workouts I do today are what I learned as a trainee.
So, today, I’m happy to say that I workout 5 days a week and I look forward to these sessions.

    1. Gym is not for everyone. I go to gym because I don’t want to skip workout at home. Plus, my body needs weight training.
I do plan my workout before going to gym, it gives me a map of what I want to do.

I am happy to learn that you enjoy your workout. Cardio warm up, abs and then cardio sounds fun.
This saturday, I’m planning to do Cardio session. Any exercise recommendation?
      I’ll share what I love

  28. I work out with a certified trainer who can assess my condition because of my chronic back pain. And my favorite exercises are:

    1. Low-impact cardio exercises: I opt for treadmill walking or elliptical workouts to engage my cardiovascular system without putting excessive strain on my back.

    2. Core strengthening exercises, such as deadlifts, bird dogs, or stability ball exercises. These help your spine and promote better posture.

    3. Resistance training with machines, such as seated chest presses, leg presses, or cable rows. These exercises allow me to strengthen specific muscle groups while maintaining back support.

    1. When I was new to exercise. I started with low impact cardio or LIIT. It may not be intense, but very impactful.

I never specific exercise with medicine ball etc, but I know few. It is fun.
I love doing exercises with cable. I would like to learn exercises with resistance band for change.

Keep doing it, keep enjoying it

    1. Hey, that’s nice!!

      Good for mind and body

  29. sitting and chillaxing….. 🙂

      1. and make some videos for my youtube channel……https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQtgzxxY6y0zwYYHmK4L1ig

      2. Great
Seems like you are an anime fan too

  30. Hi, Please help me promoting my site. mjrevu.wordpress.com

  31. I would say you need a combination of both strength and cardio training for losing weight. The danger as I see it, of concentrating purely on strength,, if you are overweight initially, is that it could place too much strain on your heart. Cardio will help ‘train’ your heart and help it cope with the strength work.

I think they compliment each other, really.

But everyone is different and I guess you have to work out what works best for you.
(Congratulations on that weight loss you mention – great effort! 🙂 )

    1. Yes, we need both!!

Too much cardio can lead to muscle loss and loose skin. Nobody wants that.

I love HIIT, but I do it less. Maybe this Saturday, if legs allows.
Otherwise, I do strength training daily. Learning something new and trying. I want to learn workout with resistance band.

Thanks, I have maintained 78 kg from last few months

  32. I kinda did HIIT when I worked in a gym or took a fitness class. It made a huge difference when I played no pads tackle football and basketball. I had enough cardio and endurance to go for a few hours. After I grew out of a serious asthma condition as a kid, I took advantage and that helped me fly down the field or court. I can’t do it much now, but when I’m up to it, I can get in a few exercises related to it here and there.

    1. That’s great, it’s same for me

I won’t say, now my session are same as it were few years ago
But like you I do few of it here and there.
I now plan 6-7 exercises and perform them. I try not to go too hard with it.

Thanks a lot for sharing your thoughts
