Imagine if someone tells you to eat the same food daily for the next month. Can you do that? I know that sounds difficult and boring, but believe it or not, some people do it for weight loss.

It’s called the mono diet or monotrophic diet, where people eat one food for the entire day and repeat it for an uncertain period.

In this post, we will discuss the advantages of such a diet and whether it’s really necessary.

What is a mono diet

As the name suggests Mono diet means single diet or single food. This involves eating the same thing the whole day.

For example, if someone is having a banana for breakfast, then a banana for lunch and dinner as well.

This diet is made popular by celebrities. They often eat the same kind of food for extended periods.

What are the advantages of a mono diet?

The biggest advantage of the mono diet is quick weight loss. The mono diet means you are eating one type of food, making it easy to track and stay in a calorie deficit.

If you are eating a banana all the time, it means you are filling your stomach, but you are also staying in a deficit, which means you are restricting yourself from eating other things and staying in control.

It becomes easier for you to plan what and how much you will eat next. It saves time and makes meal prep very easy and convenient.

This is also very appealing, as it’s simple and straightforward. It can easily be followed by a person who doesn’t know much about food and diets. But, that’s the issue.

You see, when you don’t know how a diet works, it’s not safe to suddenly stop eating a variety of foods. We will discuss more of that in the next section.

Disadvantages of the Mono diet

The mono diet is very restrictive. You are eating one type of food and have to stick to it for an extended period. You may see weight loss at a rapid speed, but can you follow this diet for much longer?

Since it is restrictive, it increases cravings. It can even affect mental health, and after a point, you might feel like it’s torture.

You can eat the same food for a few days, and it will result in some weight loss. But after that, when you return to normal eating, you will gain back more weight.

It’s also not safe because a mono diet can lead to nutritional deficiencies. When you are not eating a variety of foods, you may miss out on essential nutrients, or you could consume too much of a certain kind of nutrient.

Additionally, if you are not eating protein sources, you may lose significant muscle mass, which is very hard to regain.

It can also cause fatigue and tiredness, as the diet is very limited.

Mono diet also increases anxiety, body image, and negative perceptions about oneself. Restrictive diets like the mono diet can lead to eating disorders, and unrealistic expectations about the body and can even lead to depression.

Most importantly, no scientific research backed this.

Conclusion

The mono diet may seem very simple for people trying to lose weight. It could give them quick results, but not long-lasting ones.

There are many risks of health issues. This monotrophic diet should not be followed, and if attempted, please consult a doctor.

The good news for you is that I’m also a nutritionist and a meal planner. Let me plan your next meal, and I promise to keep it multi ☺️

Keep smiling.

  1. Kahan se dhoondte ho ..hats off to your research and awareness of weight management

  2. I love you share all sorts of media driven diet ideas that aren’t sound in advice, DU! I personally subscribe to babies trying one food at a time to rule out any allergies but now there is a big movement of baby led weaning and eating as many foods as possible to desensitize them. here’s the premise..
I’m not a fan since you then have no idea what’s creating an allergy if they show up with one and the elimination diet is much harder. Here you go if you want to research.. could be interesting for you and a new post..

“But with my 100 FIRST FOODS approach to baby-led weaning, your baby learns to safely eat 100 foods before turning one…so that if you lose 10 or 15 of those foods to picky eating in the second year of life, it’s not a big deal because you still have 85 or 90 foods that your baby will eat.”

    💗

    1. Wow, Cindy, I was only thinking about adults. What you wrote sounds like a great plan for babies to detect allergies early.

      1. I was at first but because I’m in the baby mode, I’m in that zone. It makes sense to me and my work with adults but of course the generation below me doesn’t think I know anything so research on this from someone other than “mom” would be wonderful.. 😉💓

      2. Actually it can work

        I will try it
And see 100 first food idea.

    2. That’s actually an interesting topic.

I’ll try researching more about it.

  3. Thanks, Devang. Mono diets seem apt to cause nutritional deficiencies. We need variety to get all the vitamins and minerals we need. Sounds like it also can be a see-saw diet, where the weight comes off fast and comes back as fast.

    1. True

      It’s indeed a yoyo diet

People follow it to get quick results
In long run it’s not sustainable.

  4. Always learning from you, thank you, DevU!

    1. Always appreciated. 🙇🏻‍♂️

  5. I’ve never heard of a mono diet before. Interesting way to diet. But it does seem restrictive if you do it for too long. Thanks for sharing!

    1. Strictly avoid it!!

      Very restrictive indeed.

      How’s Little E?

      1. Got it! Will be avoided. It sounds too restrictive.
Little E is good but she had a little blip today too and I was on edge thinking it was another episode. Ack. This lady keeps me on my toes.
        Hope you are doing well!

  6. Really interesting post, I can’t say I’m a fan of this diet. I’m a big believer in eating as many different things as possible because otherwise you’re going to end up lacking so many vitamins and other stuff that’s necessary for our body. No one food or drink can give you all the nutrients you need, at least that’s how I feel.

    1. There also a reason why I love your work
Because it gives experience of so many bloggers at once.

      Jokes apart

We need to have a diverse range of food. We need to keep experimenting and experiencing different taste.

      1. Haha thanks. Yeah, I agree. We need to eat as many different things as possible to get the benefits.

  7. It strikes me as crazy the diets people choose to follow sometimes. My immediate thought when reading your post was how it wouldn’t be a balanced, nutritious approach … let alone boring. It’s not sustainable

  8. I love how you contribute to our knowledge by being yourself so much reserchful.. kudos to you! This seems great

    1. Thanks for the lovely comment

  9. Definitely huge drawbacks to this type of behavior. Well said, DU! 💞
