Imagine if someone tells you to eat the same food daily for the next month. Can you do that? I know that sounds difficult and boring, but believe it or not, some people do it for weight loss.
It’s called the mono diet or monotrophic diet, where people eat one food for the entire day and repeat it for an uncertain period.
In this post, we will discuss the advantages of such a diet and whether it’s really necessary.
What is a mono diet
As the name suggests Mono diet means single diet or single food. This involves eating the same thing the whole day.
For example, if someone is having a banana for breakfast, then a banana for lunch and dinner as well.
This diet is made popular by celebrities. They often eat the same kind of food for extended periods.
What are the advantages of a mono diet?
The biggest advantage of the mono diet is quick weight loss. The mono diet means you are eating one type of food, making it easy to track and stay in a calorie deficit.
If you are eating a banana all the time, it means you are filling your stomach, but you are also staying in a deficit, which means you are restricting yourself from eating other things and staying in control.
It becomes easier for you to plan what and how much you will eat next. It saves time and makes meal prep very easy and convenient.
This is also very appealing, as it’s simple and straightforward. It can easily be followed by a person who doesn’t know much about food and diets. But, that’s the issue.
You see, when you don’t know how a diet works, it’s not safe to suddenly stop eating a variety of foods. We will discuss more of that in the next section.

Disadvantages of the Mono diet
The mono diet is very restrictive. You are eating one type of food and have to stick to it for an extended period. You may see weight loss at a rapid speed, but can you follow this diet for much longer?
Since it is restrictive, it increases cravings. It can even affect mental health, and after a point, you might feel like it’s torture.
You can eat the same food for a few days, and it will result in some weight loss. But after that, when you return to normal eating, you will gain back more weight.
It’s also not safe because a mono diet can lead to nutritional deficiencies. When you are not eating a variety of foods, you may miss out on essential nutrients, or you could consume too much of a certain kind of nutrient.
Additionally, if you are not eating protein sources, you may lose significant muscle mass, which is very hard to regain.
It can also cause fatigue and tiredness, as the diet is very limited.
Mono diet also increases anxiety, body image, and negative perceptions about oneself. Restrictive diets like the mono diet can lead to eating disorders, and unrealistic expectations about the body and can even lead to depression.
Most importantly, no scientific research backed this.
Conclusion
The mono diet may seem very simple for people trying to lose weight. It could give them quick results, but not long-lasting ones.
There are many risks of health issues. This monotrophic diet should not be followed, and if attempted, please consult a doctor.
The good news for you is that I’m also a nutritionist and a meal planner. Let me plan your next meal, and I promise to keep it multi ☺️
Keep smiling.
