How to start an exercise routine

You already know why you should exercise. If not, then let me reiterate “Exercise is good for your health, it reduces the risk of many chronic diseases”. There is so much more that we can discuss on why you should exercise. But, this blog is about how to exercise and from where you should start.

So, let’s talk about a strategy that a beginner can follow to get into an exercise routine.

Body checkup:

First, you need to check a few things, like your weight and certain other measurements. This will give you an idea that this is your starting point and in the next 1 month or so, you will work in a certain direction for some healthy improvements. Even if your goal is not to lose weight and just to start a healthy routine, you should measure yourself, as it will give you added motivation.

Also, consult a doctor before starting any kind of new routine if you have any medical condition.

Let’s start:

Honestly, I don’t know what to write in this, as I don’t know your physical conditions, your likes and dislikes, so how can I suggest to you any single type of workout? I do cardio and High-intensity interval training (HIIT), but I don’t know if you will like it or not, so cannot suggest you do cardio or any specific form of exercise?

If you don’t know where you should start from, then you should go for a morning walk. It will give you an idea within a few weeks about what you want to do. Invest some time to try several options.

Various ways:

This point is more like a sub-part of the above point. You can do various things in the name of exercise. You can start dance practice or you can go for a run, you can even ride a cycle (which is what I am doing these days) or you can just climb stairs multiple times. There is no good or bad workout. If someone is telling you, that going to the gym is the only way to stay fit, then think deeply, can you find time for the gym for the rest of your life?

You need something that makes you happy, something that you are willing to follow. If you are willing to do exercise alone or if you are interested in some kind of sport then do it & enjoy it to the fullest. Like I enjoy Cardio, HIIT and Cycling. I also do Pranayama (yoga practice) and this is what I believe in, my neighbour (who runs a dance class) wants me to join his Zumba classes, I told him NO, multiple times, and now he is not talking to me (haha), but I don’t care because I don’t want to do anything which I am not interested in.

As you are a beginner, I want you to invest some time in things with which you feel a connection, rather than things others are doing.

Set targets:

It will be interesting to set targets (after you have selected your form of activity). For beginners, targets also help as a morale booster, it will also help you to challenge yourself and let you find your limits. I am not a beginner, but as I have told you that I do cycling, I have fixed certain distances in my mind that I have to cover at a specific time. I also increase the distance I am willing to ride daily. I want you to do the same with your selected form of activity.

Suppose, you are doing push-ups and have started with a certain number, then try to increase 2 more push-ups daily. You can also find a companion, this way your exercise routine will become more interesting.

Nutrify yourself:

Nutrition is equally important for a healthy body. Suppose, your goal is to lose weight and for that, you are running 3 km daily, but at the same time you are eating junk food, do you think you are doing any good to yourself? My point is, you need a healthy diet full of nutrients. Go for healthy and fresh food (fresh burger doesn’t count). Eat seasonal fruits and veggies, include more whole grains in your diet.

We shall discuss briefly about nutrition in the future, as it requires a special blog for it. For now, just remember to stick to a healthy diet full of fibres, minerals & proteins.

The 3 P’s:

This point will work as a summary and at the same time give some additional boost.

Plan: Plan what you want to do and what needs to be done to achieve it. Follow a certain routine as you have planned it.

Passion: Show some passion in what you are doing. For anything you do, if you are passionate about it, you can give your 100%.

Patience: If you are expecting results within a week, then you need to practice some patience. You are already doing great and you need to keep doing it.

It’s not one giant step that does it, but lots of little steps.

I hope you find this information helpful and I expect you will start some form of exercise routine (if not already). Let me know in the comment section, Instagram or my Facebook page if you are having any difficulty in starting, we shall discuss some routines that you can try. I am very amiable and I will respond you to quick ( I promise).
